What fruits are acidic and what are the effects of consuming acidic fruits? Those questions might come up in your mind if you consume fruits routinely.  For you who love healthy life, consuming fruits routinely are something that familiar. Fruits contain many vitamins, minerals and antioxidant that are good and needed by the human body. By consuming fruits routinely, the good contents of fruit wills balance the nutrition that human body needed. However, there are some natures of fruits that might give negative health effects to human body if we consume them too much. One of fruits nature is acidic. Acidic means having the properties of an acid, or containing acid. The fruit is called acidic if it has low pH value. Fruits that are considered acidic have a pH level below 7. Here are some fruits that considered acidic and the effect to the human body.

Acidic fruits

As it’s mentioned before, the fruit is called acidic if it contains pH level below 7. There are some most acidic fruits that are observed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Generally citrus fruits have low levels of pH, meaning they are acidic. Citrus is a tree of a genus that includes citron, lemon, lime, orange, and grapefruit. Lemon contains high acid.  It has a pH level between 2.00-2.60. Lime has a pH level around 2.00-2.80). Grapefruits have less acid that lemon and limes. It contains a pH level around 3.00-3.75. Orange has less acid compared to other citrus fruits. It has a pH level around 3.69-4.34.

Beside citrus fruits, some others fruits also considered acidic. Cranberry, blue plums, grapes, pomegranates, blueberries, pineapples, apples, peaches and mangoes are some fruits that considered acidic. They have a low pH level. Cranberry has a pH level around 2.30-2.52. Blue plums have a pH level around 2.80-3.40. Grapes have a pH level around 2.90-3.82. Pomegranates have a pH level around 2.93-3.20. Blueberries have a pH level around 3.12-3.33. Pineapples and apples have almost same pH level around 3.20-4.00. Peaches have a pH level around 3.30-4.05. Mangoes have a pH level around 3.40-4.80

The effect

It is true that consuming those kinds of fruits also give positive health effect to our body. Citrus fruits are an excellent source of vitamin C than are needed in our body for strengthening the immune system keeps your skin smooth and elastic. Citrus fruits are also a good source of fiber. Fiber is needed by our body to improve digestive health and aiding weight loss. Related to fiber, soluble fiber that is contained by orange can help lower cholesterol level. Besides citrus fruits, other acidic fruits give also a positive health effect on the body. However, consuming unbalanced or too much acidic fruit might give also negative health effect to our body. Consuming too much citrus fruits or other acidic fruits can contribute to symptoms in those with upper gastrointestinal issues such as an ulcer or reflux. Consuming too many acidic fruits can also cause enamel erosion that leads to tooth decay. In the worst case, consuming too many acidic fruits can also lead to acidosis. It is a condition when your body fluids contain too much acid.

Does it mean we shouldn’t consume acidic fruits? No, it doesn’t mean that you should stop consuming acidic fruits. As I mentioned above, some acidic fruits such as citrus fruits have many positive health effects. The problem is when you consume them too much. Managing the fruits that you consume is very important step. Instead of consuming only one type of fruits, combining with low-acid fruits could be the best solution. For obtaining vitamin C, you don’t have to only eat citrus fruits. Cantaloupe, for example, is the best natural source of vitamin C with much less acidic than other citrus fruits. Banana is a good way to obtain fiber, Vitamin B6, and potassium that are good for your heart and bones. Melon and watermelon also can be a good choice. Others fruits such as papaya, avocados, raisin, prunes, strawberry and pears can be also choose to fulfill your daily nutrition without worrying about acidic. Additionally, if you want to consume the fruits by making them into juice; make sure that use straw when drinking fruit juice. This way can help you to reduce direct contact with your teeth and risk of enamel erosion.
